Shangqiu lies at the junction of Henan, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces. It is the eastern gateway of Henan and one of the six central cities on the China section of the Eurasian Continental Bridge.
With over 5,000 years of history, Shangqiu is known as the "Source of the Three Commerces" and "Capital of Chinese Commerce" since business, goods and trade originated here. As the capital of the ancient Shang Dynasty, Shangqiu is an important cradle of Chinese civilization and the Chinese nation. It served as the capital of the Six Dynasties and is a national historical and cultural city.
As an ancient city with over a millenia of history, Shangqiu has numerous cultural relics and historic sites. These include the Mausoleum of Suirenshi, first of the Three Sovereigns; the ancient Taishi Observatory, the earliest astronomical observatory in the world; the Tomb of Zhuangzi; Yingtian Academy, one of the four great academies of the Northern Song Dynasty; and the well-preserved ancient Shangqiu City.
