Suqian is the northernmost prefecture-level city in Jiangsu Province and the province's youngest. It lies at the intersection of the Huaihai, Coastal, and Yangtze River economic belts, earning Suqian the ancient epithet “Midpoint between Northern Qi and Lu looking southward and joining Yangtze River and Huai River”.
Suqian has a long history as the hometown of the Western Chu Overlord Xiang Yu, known as the “Hometown of the King of Xiang”. It has produced famous historical figures like Southern Song dynasty anti-Jin hero Liu Shixun, late Qing nationalist hero Yang Lihong, and People's Liberation Army artillery founder Zhu Rui.
Abundant in sights and beauty, Suqian was praised by Qianlong Emperor as the “Number One Land of Rivers and Mountains with the Finest Spring Scenery”. Top attractions include the Qianlong Emperor’s Travel Palace, Ancient Yellow River Forest Park, Luoma Lake, Hongze Lake Nature Reserve, Siyang Poplar Museum, and Subei Decisive Battle Memorial.
