Zhumadian lies in south-central Henan province, in the hilly plains along the upper reaches of the Huai River. Historically an important transportation hub, it earned its name from imperial envoys stopping to rest their horses here on north-south journeys. Dubbed "The Belly of Henan" and "The Center of China", Zhumadian was the ancestral home of the Cai, Jin and Jiang families.
It is the origin place of Double Ninth Festival and one of the source locations for the enduring folk legend of the Butterfly Lovers. Zhumadian also birthed the beautiful myth of Pangu separating heaven and earth.
Key attractions include Mount Yaoguo Scenic Area, Nanhai Temple, Lao Mountain Scenic Area, Zhougou Revolutionary Memorial, Tong Mountain Scenic Area and Jinding Mountain. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Zhumadian people organized armed resistance and the shocking Zhougou Massacre occurred, leading many patriots to visit the Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall at Qu Mountain Zhougou.
